Friday's Fictional Fellas

This blog post is a special one because it marks the beginning of something that we hope will be a success. "Friday's Fictional Fellas" is a blog post idea that we came up with together and is something that we think is really fun! Since we both live vicariously through the heroines we read about it is inevitable that we always fall for the fictional men. Every book that has more than one leading male character always leads to two very distinct teams. We often disagree on which `Team Hot Guy`we`re on so it only made sense to blog about it, and thus the idea for this post was born! This post is simple. We choose a book with two handsome male characters, we both choose a fella (not the same one!) and then we argue why our fella is best! We hope that you enjoy this post enough that we can make it a regular Friday treat. :) For our first book we chose something that is relevant and fun. Enjoy!

Book: Clockwork Angel
Author: Cassandra Clare
Fellas: Will and Jem

Ashley - "I'm Team...Will!":

Firstly, lets begin with a descriptional blurb from Cassie Clare's Infernal Devices website:

Will: Seventeen-year-old Will is the sort of young man nice Victorian girls were warned against. He drinks, gambles, and enjoys the company of ladies of questionable virtue—at least, as much as he enjoys anything. Will hates everyone and everything, with the possible exception of Jem, and even that's in some doubt. Charlotte despairs of keeping him alive past the age of nineteen. When he finds himself oddly drawn to Tessa, his friends begin to hope that the Downworlder girl will prove Will's unlikely salvation—but as Tessa grows closer to the bleak secret that makes his life a prison, danger threatens to destroy them both if she ever finds out the truth.

"His steady gaze held hers. His blue eyes were very dark, uniquely so. She had known people before with blue eyes, but they had always been light blue. Will's were the color of the sky just on the edge of night."

Okay, now that I have that out of my system, let me explain why I am in fact Team Will - even though I stated neutral in my review.  From the opening pages and dialogue between Will and Jem my heart was stolen. Will has this snarky, sarcastic, bad-boy attitude that I find every fiber of my being, drawn too. Lets face it ladies, we all want a bad boy - a boy with mystery and allure. He's dreamy!  "Look at him. The face of a bad angel and eyes like the night sky in Hell. He's very pretty..."Who really wants a guy who reveals himself right away? I want a guy that I have to try and solve. Jem is all sweet and great; I get that - total friend material. But he just isn't for me. I'd gladly protect Will from those evil Demon pox. So all the Clockwork Angel fans out there, you agree with me right? Team Will all the way!!! ;)

Favourite Will Quotes:

"There's plenty of sense in nonsense sometimes, if you wish to look for it."

"You do believe everything I say, though, don't you? Do I seem unusually trustworthy to you, or are you just a naive sort?"

"Bloodthirsty little beasts. Never trust a duck."

"There was a time I thought I was a ferret," Will said, "but that turned out to be the opium haze. Did you know it had that effect? Because I didn't."

"You make me laugh. From the moment you hit me

Christie - "I'm Team...Jem!":

Firstly, lets begin with a descriptional blurb from Cassie Clare's Infernal Devices website:

Jem: Brought up in the Institute in Shanghai, Jem's parents were killed by a demon who allowed Jem to live—but with a terrible price to be paid. Frail and silver-haired, Jem seems an unlikely demon-killer, but his skills and swift intelligence make him a formidable foe. He finds a kindred spirit in Tessa as both of them feel they are torn between two worlds, neither belonging completely to one or to the other. As Jem's affection for her grows, will Will have to hurt the only person in his life he's ever seemed to care about?

Why am I Team Jem you ask? Well for many reasons. The first being that Jem has this unwavering faith in humanity that is almost incomprehensible. He sees the good in pretty much everything including his good friend Will. Jem is sweet and understanding, and enjoys Tessa's company without trying to compromise her virtue! I know what you're thinking: "Nice guys finish last", but who says they have to? I'm always the one who gets suckered in by the bad boy and it's not always a good thing. Although I can see the appeal of Will's sarcasm and sex appeal, what Jem offers is more substantial. I think that Jem might be paving the way for respectable young men everywhere. :) <3 you Jem. xoxo!

Favourite Jem Quotes:

Jem sighed. "Do what you like, William. You always do."

"Whatever you are physically," he said, "male or female, strong or weak, ill or healthy--all those things matter less than what your heart contains. If you have the soul of a warrior, you are a warrior. All those other things, they are the glass that contains the lamp, but you are the light inside." He smiled then, seeming to have come back to himself, slightly embarrassed. "That's what I believe."

Will: "Well, she's not responding to my advances," he observed more brightly than he felt, "so she must be dead."
Jem: "Or she's a woman of good taste and sense."

"I go to my favorite place in London," said Jem, "and I stand and look at the water, and I think about the continuity of life, and how the river rolls on, oblivious of the petty upsets in our lives."

"Sometimes," Jem said, "our lives can change so fast that the change outpaces our minds and hearts. It's those times, I think, when our lives have altered but we still long for the time before everything was altered-- that is when we feel the greatest pain. I can tell you, though, from experience, you grow accustomed to it. You learn to live your new life, and you can't imagine, or even really remember, how things were before."

  1. Great idea for a weekly feature! I'm sure guys will have a lot of fun with this. As for me, I haven't read CWA yet so I have no idea whose Team I will be on. I can see the appeal of both...
