When the story begins in Evernight, Bianca has just left the small town where she's spent her whole life. She's a new student at Evernight Academy, a creepily Gothic boarding school where her classmates are somehow too perfect: smart, sleek and almost predatory. Bianca knows she doesn't fit in.
Then she meets Lucas, another loner, who seems fiercely determined not to be the "Evernight type." There's a connection between Bianca and Lucas that can't be denied. She would risk anything to be with him—but dark secrets are fated to tear them apart... and to make Bianca question everything she's ever believed to be true.*

In the first book of the Evernight series, Claudia Gray paints a vivid picture of Bianca Olivier, a shy girl who finds it difficult to approach new people and make new friends. When Bianca is forced to attend Evernight Academy at the will of her parents she is also forced to make her own path. Readers will be able to relate well to the emotions that Bianca struggles with in her first few weeks at her new school. Her character is anxious about fitting in, but is also curious about another new student, Lucas Ross. It is Bianca`s budding affection for Lucas that helps her to find a sense of belonging within Evernight`s walls.

The approach that Gray takes in her writing gives her the ability to shock her readers. By enabling Bianca`s character to discover information on her own allows readers to stay in the dark about what is truly taking place. There are multiple jaw-dropping moments that change everything and everyone. There is no denying that Evernight will hold your attention from start to finish with an abundance of twists and turns.

The depiction of Bianca and Lucas`relationship is enticing and well established. The two of them are playful and yet they also spend time in disagreement with each other. It is the balance between these two elements that helps to ground their relationship and make it more realistic. The words used to describe the characters' desires for each other are carefully chosen and carry tremendous weight. Their relationship is constantly being tested and these intimate moments that they share put their struggle into perspective.

Bianca and Lucas, despite their feelings for each other, are up against the odds. Their affinity for one another continues to be challenged without resolve and yet is worth every second of effort. Evernight is a wonderfully written tale of star-crossed lovers.
