It is has been said that Canadians are nice and if you get to know Liz from Midnight Bloom Reads you will know this to be true. In the early months of our blogging we needed to find a correspondant for the Indigio Teen Read Awards. When we asked Liz she was more than happy to share her thoughts with us. After the event she wrote us up a wonderful post and provided us with some incredible author photos. Since then we have been eager to have Liz back and here she is! Read below to find out which series made Liz into the book lover she is today...

When I think about my favourite books as a child, the Harry Potter series is immediately brought to mind. As a child, I grew up reading tons of fairy tales and other short stories, but the only novels I read were Star Wars-related. Seriously! I have tons of middle grade Star Wars novels but the series that really got me to broaden my horizons outside of science fiction was without a doubt J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Her novels helped inspire the crazy passion I have for books today … and it all started with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, when J.K. Rowling first took her readers on a journey into a magical world where anything could happen. It was definitely the beginning of something wondrously good!
Reading a Harry Potter novel is not like reading any other series… it’s like an experience. You become so easily lost within the pages, in a world where we mere muggles have luckily been allowed to glimpse into as we see the sheer brilliance of it all. Quidditch, invisibility cloaks, potions, wands, chocolate frogs, charmed chessboards... the list can go and on of everything I read in awe when I was younger. As a child, I fantasized about suddenly discovering I was a witch so I could attend Hogwarts and be sorted into Gryffindor! (Okay, so I’m totally still wishing that would happen!)
Seriously, everything about the Harry Potter series comes to life… from the characters, plot, setting, and everything in between. There are the heartfelt moments that make you want to grab a tissue and cry, and just as easily, there are light-hearted ones that make your eyes light up. It’s a story of friendship and family, but it’s also a classic case of good combating evil. It really does have a bit of everything. Whenever I hear someone say they still haven’t read the series, I simply shake my head because they are truly missing out!
I think I was supposed to focus on the one book but I couldn’t help myself! I guess you could say that everything related to Harry Potter brings on a major gush fest. With so many memorable characters such as Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, and of course, the evil Lord Voldemort, to only name a few... this is a series that will be forever cherished for so many readers of all ages for many years to come.
Thanks to Ashley and Christie for hosting Canuck Week!! It was fun to help take part! ^_^

This post made me squee so hard. I love the occasional Harry Potter posts because they bring back so many book related memories. The Harry Potter books are the only ones I can bring myself to read over and over again. I always discover something new about the wizarding world each time I read!

Liz, I just love that you're a Star Wars geek. Haha, too amazing. Seriously, I've been playing Lego Star Wars on Wii for the past few days.
ReplyDeleteI almost wish I could have been a kid when Harry Potter came out because I can't imagine how cool it would've been to grow up reading those books... I think the imagination aspect of it would've been even cooler. But obviously they're amazing no matter how old you are, which is one of the coolest aspects of them. (Could I say 'cool' anymore? Geeze.)
I also freak out when I hear people haven't read them. Even in library school there were a few people in my readers' advisory class who hadn't, and those of us who had were like "wait, what? you haven't read Harry Potter?" lol we seem to think it's like a book lover's sin or something ;)
Yay for Canadians! We are nice if I do say so myself :D
ReplyDeleteAnd yay for Harry Potter! It's amazing how many people have gotten hooked on reading because of HP :)
I agreee Harry Potter is a great series... though I wasn't a kid anymore when it came out. ;)
ReplyDeleteAshley and Christie- Awwwwww, you're both too kind.
ReplyDeleteJackie- I've re-read the entire series a few times but I haven't done so lately. I'm pretty sure if I read again now, it would be like re-discovering the wonders of Harry Potter since I'm sure I've forgotten some of the details.
Ashley- haha, I AM A STAR WARS GEEK AND PROUD OF IT. Hearing that someone hasn't read the Harry Potter series IS like a sin or something, lol. But my own sister hasn't even read the novels even though I've told her so many times to. I'm sure if she began, she'll be mad at herself for not reading them sooner! :)
harry potter was my first love. and *high five* for Canada =D great post :)
