Waiting On Wednesday (7)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine and it allows other bloggers to see  which book releases you are highly anticipating.

The sequel to the New York Times Best selling phenomenon, Hush, Hush
Nora should have know her life was far from perfect. Despite starting a relationship with her guardian angel, Patch (who, title aside, can be described anything but angelic), and surviving an attempt on her life, things are not looking up. Patch is starting to pull away and Nora can't figure out if it's for her best interest or if his interest has shifted to her arch-enemy Marcie Millar. Not to mention that Nora is haunted by images of her father and she becomes obsessed with finding out what really happened to him that night he left for Portland and never came home.
The farther Nora delves into the mystery of her father's death, the more she comes to question if her Nephilim blood line has something to do with it as well as why she seems to be in danger more than the average girl. Since Patch isn't answering her questions and seems to be standing in her way, she has to start finding the answers on her own. Relying too heavily on the fact that she has a guardian angel puts Nora at risk again and again. But can she really count on Patch or is he hiding secrets darker than she can even imagine?

I really need my Patch fix! If you haven't read Hush, Hush, I highly recommend it :)

Toronto's Word on the Street Festival

On Sunday September 26th a festival aimed at celebrating literacy was held in provinces all over Canada. The festival brings together many authors from all over Canada and is free to the public. I have always wanted to attend however I have never been able to until this year. My sister Stephanie made the trip up to Toronto to spend the day with other book lovers and authors alike. Before we left for the event we had a schedule in mind of all the events that we really wanted to attend. With so many events occurring at the same time it was difficult to make the choice but somehow we managed. I'm going to take you through our day and highlight a few books that I was really excited about.

12:00pm - 1:00pm: We attended the Youth Hour at The Remarkable Reads Tent during this time frame. The three authors who read and signed were Natale Ghent, Rebecca Eckler and Kelley Armstrong. The first up was Natalie Ghent who read from her young adult book Gravity Brings Me Down. The reading she did from this book was quite funny and seemed to capture the high school experience quite well. The story follows Sioux Sharp who is a very unique girl making her way through her adolescent years. Her character seems quite quirky and lovable which always makes for a good read. I picked up a copy of this book at the tent and had Natale sign it for me. She told me not to let "gravity bring me down". I am very excited to read this book and to review it for all of you.

After Natale read, it was Rebecca's turn to take the stage and then Kelley. Before Rececca started her reading the always fabulous Kelley Armstrong sat smack dab in front of me and my sister. Rebecca read from her book Apple's Angst and then it was Kelley's turn. The program for the festival said that Kelley would read an excerpt from the third book in her Darkest Powers series, The Reckoning. Well unpredictable Kelley decided to mix it up and read the prologue from her upcoming book, The Gathering. I had not read the prologue yet so it was great to hear it especially since Kelley was reading. After the reading we stood in line and I got my stepmom a signed copy of Kelley's Exit Strategy. :)

1:30pm -2:00pm: We scooted down to the Digital Drive stage during this time to listen to The Book of Awesome author Neil Parischa discuss how he went from blog to book. I am so glad that we made it to this event because it was great! Neil is hilarious, and his advice was really wonderful. For those of you, (living under a rock perhaps), who have not heard about the blog, or the book that emerged from it, then I will fill you in. Neil's blog, 1000awesomethings.com , is exactly that. He started at 1000 and is counting down everyday with one new awesome thing. Examples of these include: snow days, the smell of gasoline, and BookJunkies favourite- staying up so late that everything becomes funny. The book is a mixture of old content from the blog with about 25% new content which can not be found there. When it comes to this blog and the accompanying book I highly recommend them both. If you're ever feeling sad or run down just read a couple awesome things and you will feel better!

Neil's main reason for being at the Digital Drive stage was to let you know that ANYONE can make a blog. He talked about a few tips on how to do it, but most importantly he said one incredible thing that stuck with me. "Your blog shouldn't be about you." He's so right. Your blog needs to make those who visit it feel that it is all there for them. So we will strive to do that for you guys here.

2:00pm - 2:40pm: My sister Steph and I are foodies in that we think about dinner at breakfast time. It only made sense then that we would stop at the Cooks'n'Books stage. We went to the stage at this time because we wanted to catch Three Sisters Around the Greek Table authors Betty, Eleni, and Samantha Bakopoulos. The recipes in this book sound really fantastic and healthy too. The sisters actually made a bean soup during their event and it took all of our strength not to run up and eat it!

2:40pm - 3:00pm: We hit up the Children's Reading Tent during this time slot specifically so that we could hear Susin Nielson read from her book Dear George Clooney: Please Marry my Mom. Susin did a great job when reading from this book and it is absolutely hilarious! The book follows Violet who is stuck getting used to her mom's new boyfriend, Dudley Wiener. Violet really does not care for Dudley and is determined that she knows what is best for her mother. In an effort to protect her mother's happiness she sends a letter to George Clooney asking him to marry her mom. The writing in this book is truly unique and is incredibly funny, and Violet's character is easy to like. I am beyond excited about reading this book and I hope that you will consider reading it too. Susin mentioned during the event that she sent a copy to George Clooney through his publicist. I wonder what he would think of it? ;)

Stargazer and Francesca Lia Block's Pretty Dead. After this stop my sister and I walked past the tent for Mabel's Fables bookstore in Toronto. There we spotted Jeri Smith-Ready kindly signing books for the stores stock and for waiting fans. :)
Overall the entire day was absolutely wonderful. It was a great opportunity to learn about Canadian authors and their incredible books. I can't wait to go again next year!

Smart Chicks Kick It Tour: Last Stop

Saturday, September 25th in Brampton, Canada marked the last stop on the Smart Chicks Kick It! Tour. We were lucky enough to be able to attend this wonderful event and headed to the Chapters store early to get a good seat. Apparently we are not hardcore enough though because by the time we got there about 15 people were already waiting. After picking out and paying for a few last minute book purchases we grabbed a couple chairs and settled in for the 3 and a half hour wait. As we were waiting we chatted with a few book lovers who were sitting near us which made the time pass. We also watched them set up the make-shift stage where the authors were going to be sitting. At this point in the morning our anticipation was building for the authors to arrive...
The authors arrived one by one and passed all of the waiting fans. At this point it was pretty much impossible to control our excitement! To entertain us before the event, Chapters Brampton held a bunch of giveaways for the waiting readers. Thanks to our good friend Twitter, and Ashley's quick reflexes when I threw my phone at her, we won a $25 gift card from Chapters! Yay us! There were also a number of pairs of tickets to the Teen Read Awards which took place later that night in Toronto. Despite the epicness of these giveaways there was also a basket of books and gear put together by the Smart Chicks and one lucky girl won it! By this time there were hundreds of fans lined up in the Chapters and everyone was anxiously awaiting the start of the event.
At 2:00pm the time had come and Chapters Brampton announced each author one by one as they found their chair. Minus the darling Kami Garcia, (who was unable to attend but we wish her well!), the Smart Chicks: Kelley Armstrong, Melissa Marr, Alyson Noel, Jeri Smith-Ready, Margaret Stohl, Jennifer Lynn Barnes and Melissa de la Cruz grabbed a seat and the event began! Kelley took the lead and gave the audience a little bit of a background about the tour. As most of you know the Smart Chicks Kick It! tour was put together by Kelley and Melissa so that they could have their tour, their way. It is important to note that this means the tour stops were even FUNDED by the authors themselves, hence why they kick it!
After the ladies settled in they gave away some more FREE SWAG despite the big basket that they already donated. One lucky reader got their hands on an ARC of Melissa Marr's Darkest Mercy, and another reader on Kelley Armstrong's The Gathering. Pretty cool, eh? We thought so. In addition to this readers snagged Smart Chicks t-shirts and Beautiful Creatures swag! When all the giveaways were over the authors did some really fun little games and had a Q&A session. The best part of all this? Margaret Stohl. We had no idea how incredibly funny and animated she was! We were both cracking up every time she spoke. It was so hilarious!

After a good 45 minutes of warming up the audience it was time for the signing to begin! The rule for the Smart Chicks tour? 3 books, per author, per time in line. Incredible! With our stack of books weighing us down we filed into the line and waited to go up and have our books signed. Not only did we bring our own books to be signed, but we brought the books that our contest winners had chosen. Every book got signed, but more than that, every book got personalized. Ashley chatted a lot with each of the authors too which was fabulous. I on the other hand was pretty quiet especially when I had Jeri Smith-Ready sign Shade for me. It was pretty much a fan girl moment but I am not ashamed. ;)

When meeting all of the authors they thanked us for attending the event. Yes, THEY thanked US. We were confused too. These authors took time out of their own schedules and money out of their own pockets to set out on this incredible tour. They traveled all over the U.S. and even made the effort to stop in Canada. They gave away ARCs and wonderful swag, all the while signing an abundance of books until their hands were cramped. So Ashley and I would like to take this time to thank the Smart Chicks. Thank you Kelley and Melissa for having the idea for a tour and for making it a reality. Thank you to Alyson, Jeri, Margaret, Jennifer and Melissa de la Cruz for making the Canadian stop on the Smart Chicks Kick It! tour. You were all so incredibly sweet to us and we are humbled by your generosity. Finally, a thank you to all of the Smart Chicks, at every tour stop. You are all incredible women and wonderful role models for girls everywhere.

Much love,

BLOGGERS SPEAK OUT!

This week a lot has been taking place within the online community concerning this ARTICLE by a Dr. Wesley Scroggins.

This week a lot has been taking place within the online community concerning an article by Dr. Wesley Scroggins. (Please note that the article was linked to in this piece and is quoted from but has since then been taken off of the original website)

We've always lived in a society where freedom of speech has been a quality bestowed upon us by parents, teachers, and our community. Not too mention Freedom of Speech is our right as human beings. What Dr. Wesley Scroggins is claiming in his article takes away that Freedom. Not only does he strip us all of our individual freedom to choose what we read, he has taken away our right to be heard. There are so many instances where women and men, boys and girls, go through things we can't even begin to imagine - things that change their lives forever, and they don't always know how to deal with it. In the article, Scroggins claims that,

"Sex education curriculum in the fourth grade includes topics on reproduction. Is this what parents and taxpayers in this community want their children exposed to in school? Is this how taxpayers want their tax money used? Equally shocking is the content of the high school English classes. In high school English classes, children are required to read and view material that should be classified as soft pornography."

The last time I checked, the age in which children are now sexually active has increased exponentially. Why is it so wrong for children to learn about sex education at an early age? It is often the case that children who are not educated in sexual reproduction end up pregnant or sexually active at early ages. No, sex education at a 4th grade level will probably not stop the age in which teens begin having sex, but isn't that up to the parents to decide? If they are unhappy with the material being covered they should speak to their child's teacher and see if something can be worked out.

Now, to begin on the subject of his apparent "soft pornography." Trying to even fathom what kind of man can deduce rape to soft pornography is excruciatingly difficult to comprehend. Soft Pornography by definition is something in which is enjoyed -either voyeuristically or read. Rape is an act UNWANTED by the victim. It is something in which far too many have to deal with and are unsure how to go about dealing with the impact this violent act has had on their lives. Books like Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, allow for teens who are going through the same thing as the main character, or perhaps another issue, to relate and seek the help they need. Books like Speak allow for victims of unwanted crimes, image issues etc to know they are not alone. Scroggins comments by saying,

“One such book is called "Speak." They also watch the movie. This is a book about a very dysfunctional family. Schoolteachers are losers, adults are losers and the cheerleading squad scores more than the football team. They have sex on Saturday night and then are goddesses at church on Sunday morning. The cheer squad also gets their group-rate abortions at prom time. As the main character in the book is alone with a boy who is touching her female parts, she makes the statement that this is what high school is supposed to feel like. The boy then rapes her on the next page.”

Actually, the book and movie both contain two rape scenes. Apparently Mr. Scroggins has not attended high school, which makes me begin to wonder how he managed to get his doctorate. Speak is dealing with REAL issues that take place everyday in high schools - not only in North America, but around the world as well. Girls DO deal with having unprotected sex and unwanted pregnancies. Families can be dysfunctional; does that make them less loving? No! As I have yet to read Speak, I am are not sure what exactly takes place, but I've seen girls so self conscience and down on their selves that they are so broken, the acts they do or partake in happen without them even realizing. They are so numb by this point, they think they are worthless. Apparently the pain and suffering a rape victim goes through means nothing to Scroggins. Apparently it is all in good fun or in Scroggins’ words, Soft Porn.

Books should not be censored. Who gives anyone the right to tell others what they can or cannot read or what they can or cannot write? Obviously Scroggins has lived a beyond ignorant and sheltered life. His world must be full of rainbows and butterflies. His mind is deluded and his world is not reality. Novels that are able to address real life problems give a voice to those who are either too ashamed or too scared to speak out themselves. These novels give them the platform to seek the help they need.

Please speak out against censorship! It is through our voices, people like Scroggins will stop telling us what our Freedom means. We are disgusted with people like Scroggins who think they know best for an entire population.

Bloggers Speak Out is a movement sparked by the recent article, "Filthy Books Demeaning to Republic Education" by Dr. Wesley Scroggins that was published in the Springfield, MO News-Leader on September 18th. In this article, Scroggins vehemently advocates the censorship of books in schools, and specifically requests that the following books be removed from the Republic school system: Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler, and Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. To show our support of these authors and to fight against book banning and censorship, we have decided to take action and speak out.

Below is a list of links of bloggers speaking out against book banning and censorship--in the form of giveaways, posts, and reviews. Some are "officially" participating in what we're calling Bloggers Speak Out, and others are posts that we've found around the blogosphere. If you get time, you should definitely check them out!

His powers -- Inhuman
His passion -- Beyond immortal . . .

All her life, Ashlyn Darrow has been tormented by voices from the past. To end the nightmare, she has come to Budapest seeking help from men rumored to have supernatural abilities, not knowing she'll be swept into the arms of Maddox, their most dangerous member -- a man trapp ed in a hell of his own.

Neither can resist the instant hunger than calms their torments . . . and ignites an irresistible passion. But every heated touch and burning kiss will edge them closer to destruction -- and a soul-shattering test of love . . .

The Darkest Night is the first book in Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld Series. I have recently just finished reading Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series, and it is through her and her fan base that I was introduced to Gena Showalter - I’ve been apparently living under a rock.

The first book sets up a lot in terms of characters, plot, and mythology surrounding these fascinating male characters. This first book focuses on Maddox or Violence as he is often referred to as by his fellow underworld Lords. Maddox and his immortal friends were angry with the gods and in response -for them appointing Pandora the guardian of what we know as Pandora’s Box- they lashed out and attacked Pandora. The outcome was deadly; literally. All of the men and one female immortal present during the attack, opened the box and let out the demons contained inside. Not only are these demons so evil that the gods themselves were afraid of them, but they attach themselves to the men and woman immortals, making them Lords of the Underworld.

In this story we follow Maddox as he tries to control the demon inside of him, and Ashyln, a young female who has the ability to hear past conversations. Their love story is unique and I really enjoyed both Maddox and Ashlyn in their quests to not only contain their own secrets, but to make sense of the new feelings taking over their minds and souls.

I can see some people not particularly liking Ashlyn or seeing themselves connect with her. I, on the other hand, absolutely loved her fearlessness and ability to love beyond mere mortal things. Her love is something we all crave to have and crave to give. The love between Maddox and Ashlyn is not without its faults and problems, but it is a love that gives off the transcend through time vibe.

As a lover of Greek mythology, I was ecstatic to read a series where the main characters are immortals from legend. The story line is absolutely fascinating and I’m glad that the characters we are to see throughout the series are all established within this first book. By Gena doing this, she has allowed her readers to better familiarize themselves with the male characters and feel more a part of their world.

I would suggest this read and tell you to quickly purchase all of the other books in the series. Trust me! Once you read The Darkest Night, you will be begging for more.

Review: TATTOO

Author: Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Trade Paperback
272 Pages, 5.3 x 8 x 0.6 in
January 9, 2007
Random House Children's Books
038573347X
9780385733472
Available from:  Chapters, Amazon, The Book Depository
List Price: $10.44, $7.99, $7.76
Rating: 4/5

Bailey Morgan isn't the type of girl who shows a lot of skin, but somehow, she ends up in a dressing room at the mall with her friend Delia applying a temporary tattoo to her lower back. Never one to suffer fashion doubt, trendsetter Delia knows exactly where she wants her own tattoo: on her stomach, right where her shirt ends - can you say "midriff"? Annabelle, the quiet one, chooses the back of her neck, and tomboy Zo plasters hers on the top of her foot. The tattoos will last for three days, and Delia's sure that with them, the four friends will absolutely kill at the school dance.

Unfortunately, killing is just what someone has in mind, and Bailey, Delia, Annabelle, and Zo are in for the battle of their lives. Along with her tattoo, each girl receives a gift - a supernatural power to help them in their fight. As Bailey's increasingly frightening dreams reveal the nature of their enemy, it becomes clear to the girls that it's up to them to save the world. And if they can get Delia to stop using her newfound power to turn gum wrappers into Prada pumps, they might actually stand a chance.

Jennifer Lynn Barnes has figured out exactly what this world needs a little more of: Girl Power. I'm not sure I have ever read a book that has made me feel so powerful to be a female! The four main characters in Tattoo, Annabelle, Zo, Delia and Bailey, are all very unique. Annabelle, also known as A-Belle, is kind of my favourite. She is smart and logical, and is kind of like the mother hen. Then we have Zo and Delia who are so different that it is kind of a miracle that they are friends. Zo is a self-proclaimed tomboy whereas Delia is a self-proclaimed girly girl. Although I say they are very different, they do have something in common; they are both pretty fiesty and like a good fight! Finally we have the main character, Bailey, the clumsy and awkward girl who is more beautiful and strong than she gives herself credit for. While all of these girls are fabulous on their own they are better when they are together. Their friendship is what will pull you into Tattoo from the beginning, but the ancient evil that is haunting the girls will keep you there.

The dynamic between the four friends is interesting enough, but when you throw in powerful tattoos you get something better. The pack of tattoos is the catalyst in the book and is what sparks the girls adventure. Soon after applying the tattoos all four of the girls find out that they have some sort of supernatural power. Bailey realizes she has pyrokinesis and can start fires by just using her mind. Zo has premonitions and she also has the ability to find things if she concentrates on them. For Delia her power is transmogrify which gives her the ability to change one thing into another. A-Belle's power is that she is telepathic and can hear her friends thoughts even when they do not want her to. What I enjoyed most about the idea of having the girls develop powers is that they eventually get to be used together. It is through this that we see how the powers relate to the girls' friendship. They are stronger together with or without the powers.

The questions that plague the girls in this book are often about why they have been given these powers, and who are they going to use them against. The answers to these questions are delivered at a steady pace throughout the book and are never held back too long from the reader. What is also evident in this book is the wonderful use of language. This is a YA book, but it is more geared to a pre-teen audience. While reading it though you would have no idea because Barnes does not talk down to her young readers. Language use extends further than the pages though because Barnes brings an element of Linguistics into the story. Some people might find this boring, but as a Linguistics major in university I was quite thrilled. I hope that this theme is brought to light again in the sequal, Fate.

In the end the girls are able to use their powers together and to understand why they were gifted with them in the first place. While the end of the book does not leave a huge cliffhanger it does make you want to read the sequal. Bailey's journey has only just begun and with the help of her friends I am sure that she will be able to get through whatever comes next. I reccommend this book to anyone who just wants to feel all warm and fuzzy. The abundance of girl power and the incredible bond between Bailey and her friends makes Tattoo a wonderful read. I just ordered the sequal Fate and it should be here next week. :)

P.S. Happy reading...in bed. hehehehe
